Support sustainability!

BÄR shoes are a sustainable product by virtue of their product and production philosophy. They are made using natural materials and have an above-average lifespan. With a comprehensive sustainability strategy, BÄR supports the three areas of social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

The jury of the German Sustainability Award emphasizes: "BÄR has integrated sustainable solutions into all areas of the company and has been taking ecological responsibility for many years. In its own production facility in India, BÄR is a pioneer and role model for the resource-efficient use of resources and sustainability. For example, it covers over 60% of its energy needs with renewable energy and saves around 81 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Was wir heute tun, bestimmt, wie die Welt morgen aussehen wird

What we do today determines what the world will look like tomorrow!

We sell our shoes ourselves and can plan our quantities precisely; remaining pairs are offered in our outlet. We either use leftover materials for new models or for accessories such as bags or shoehorns. This is important to us.

Erneuerbare Energien Image

Renewable energy

For the BÄR brand, the same climate protection requirements apply in India as in our home country of Germany. In both India and Germany, we generate more than 60% of our own energy needs from renewable sources. A wastewater treatment plant in Ambur, India, provides impressive treatment of groundwater, saving 16,000 liters per day. This facility also enables energy savings by eliminating the need to pump water from the well. Avoiding harmful chemicals in gardening prevents soil contamination. In 2020, we also saved 81.78 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to driving approximately 400,000 km in a mid-size gasoline car—enough to travel around the world about 10 times.

Qualität hält Banner Image

Quality lasts

The fundamental idea of sustainability is, first of all, that a product should last as long as possible. The later a product needs to be replaced, the less waste is generated and the more sustainable it is. For this reason, our motto is: Quality lasts!

BÄR shoes last two to four times longer than conventional shoes! The materials used by BÄR are subject to strict quality standards and durability testing. The functionality of the materials used should be maintained throughout their entire service life. For our sports brand Joe Nimble®, we provide a two-year warranty.

Herkunft der Rohstoffe Banner Image

Origin of raw materials

When leather is properly processed, it is recyclable and biodegradable. Leather is a natural product that has been used for hundreds of years and is extremely durable when properly cared for. At BÄR, we also pay very close attention to the quality and origin of our materials. We therefore source a large proportion of our leather in Europe from suppliers and traditional companies we know, which we regularly assess for quality, performance, and working processes and conditions. We source the other major proportion, including leather such as lining leather, close to our production facilities in India, and are 100% convinced of its quality.

Fairness Banner Image

Fairness

We do not classify people based on culture, beliefs, gender, or sexual orientation. We also stand firmly against child labor, forced labor, and discrimination. Working conditions at our domestic and international operations are regularly audited and certified—see Certificates. Humane and fair working conditions, appropriate compensation, and occupational health and safety are priorities for us as a family-owned company. This applies to our employees, store operators, and suppliers.

Gesellschaftliche Verantwortung Banner Image

Social responsibility

Our actions are guided by respect and appreciation for people and nature. Good working conditions are very important to us. In addition to healthy nutrition and an environmentally friendly, ergonomic workplace, we offer flexible, individual working arrangements, including working from home, part-time work, and opportunities for further training.

Soziales Engagement Banner Image

Social Engagement

BÄR considers supporting social projects worldwide an important part of social sustainability. For example, in 2020, BÄR supported a school for deaf and mute children in India by installing a drinking water filtration system and providing school uniforms and teaching materials. BÄR also supports numerous other social projects:

  • regular shoe donations to organizations such as the Invitare Foundation
  • support for the Lions Club
  • donations of face masks to schools in Bietigheim-Bissingen

For long-term economic sustainability, the BÄR brand invests in the future by supporting young people from the region after they graduate from school, either through vocational training or as part of the world’s unique dual study program. As an IHK-recognized training provider, BÄR has up to 20 trainees and students working in various areas. From product management, purchasing, and accounting to digitalization and web design, all areas are represented, helping to preserve and expand BÄR’s expertise.

Innovation Banner Image

Innovation

To not only keep up with future trends but also help shape them, BÄR regularly invests in collaborations and funding programs that not only advance the BÄR brand but also preserve its long-term competitiveness. This makes it possible to develop sneakers that, for example, have a lower carbon dioxide footprint or contain innovative vegan leather. Innovation thus not only enables us to look into the future, but also to live in it.

Prozessoptimierung Banne Image

Process optimization

Thanks to modern technology and optimized production and project processes, BÄR can implement ideas and new projects efficiently while conserving resources. The introduction of working from home, new spatial solutions, and the latest software enables agile and flexible responses. This creates the freedom to continue developing shoes that are comfortable and durable in the long term.

BÄR supports VOX MARIS, From Waste to New Life

The VOX MARIS project, developed by the BioDesign Foundation, is the latest technology for reusing the tons of plastic that end up in the world’s oceans. The BioDesign Foundation is a nonprofit organization that consistently conveys a message of hope and positivity. BÄR is pleased to provide financial support for the project and work with VOX MARIS as a cooperation partner. In this way, BÄR is making a meaningful contribution to the revitalization of the oceans.

The idea

“The idea for the BioDesign Foundation arose from the desire to go one step further. They believe that the solution is not to bring plastic waste from the oceans onto land and then destroy it, but to find a way to give it a second life and a second use” – This gave rise to the BioDesign Foundation’s idea for the VOX MARIS project.

Most marine litter in the world consists of plastics.

Unfortunately, a large proportion of marine animals’ food consists of plastic. Plastic breaks down into several pieces and can be divided into nanoplastics and microplastics. Nanoplastics are the smallest particles, which sink deep into the ocean and end up on plankton. Microplastics are the larger particles, which spread across the surface of the water like a soup and are consequently also eaten by marine animals.

Recovery of lost plastic

100 kg of plastic is collected daily by fishing boats. To encourage its recovery, fishermen are paid for the plastic waste they catch. The boats bring their plastic catch back to the port, to the HARBOUR COLLECTION CENTERS. In Italy, a partner was found with whom the dream of cleaning up the oceans is becoming a reality.

Working with a research team that has been developing a prototype thermocompaction system for more than 10 years, it is possible to begin recovering this lost plastic.
