We are always looking for the right shoes. The right shoes to go with a dress or jeans, the right running or hiking shoes or a pair for work. But do we also look for shoes that fit our feet?
We have put together some tips for you to help you avoid bad purchases and enjoy your new shoes. Yes, appearance has a major influence on our purchasing behavior. For many people, the design of the shoes is the only deciding factor. If you also pay attention to a few other factors, you will have a clear advantage. Here are some recommendations to help you find the right shoes.
1. Take your feet’s condition throughout the day into account
Our feet are not in top form at every time of day. During the day, our feet are subjected to considerable strain. The afternoon and evening are the best times to find the right shoes. Otherwise, there is a risk that the shoes will be too small and will eventually pinch.

3. Assessing the fit correctly
The shoes should always be longer than your feet. The thumb test is the best way to find this out. There should be approximately a thumb’s width of space between the toe and the tip of the shoe. There should be enough room to give your toes sufficient freedom of movement. This is because the toes move forward as you roll through your step.
Always put on both shoes at the same time and walk around in them for a bit: You can only properly test the fit of your new BÄR shoes while standing and walking. When viewed from above, the original BÄR shoes may seem a little wider to you when you first try them on. But who looks at your shoes from above? Thanks to their carefully designed and expertly crafted cut, your shoes look highly fashionable, slim and attractive from the side and from the front—just as everyone sees them.“
4. Choose shoes made from natural and/or certified materials
Our feet are generally in shoes all day long. Since our feet sweat, it is important that footwear is made of breathable materials. Leather is the best choice for this. Ideally, the shoe’s lining should also be made of leather or textile rather than synthetic material.
Here is another brief summary of the most important points:
- It is best to measure your feet before buying.
- Your toes should have a thumb’s width of room in front of them.
- A shoe must not be too loose, but it must not be too tight either.
- Choose natural materials (e.g. leather, fabric)
- Go shopping in the afternoon or evening, as your feet will have become slightly larger by then due to the strain they have been under
- In addition to length, the width of the shoe is also important.
- Change your shoes regularly—this provides variety.
