Relaxation for Body and Mind – Reflexology Massage

Entspannung für Körper und Geist - Reflexzonenmassage

Once you have treated yourself to one, you will want it again and again: reflexology. How does it work? What does it do? And why does it feel so good? We would like to explore these questions here.

You may have seen one of those colorful illustrations showing two feet divided into many different zones, labeled with the names of bones, organs, and muscle groups. At the tip of the big toe, for example, you will find “top of the skull,” slightly lower down “skull” and “jaw,” and below that “cerebrum,” “cerebellum,” “base of the skull,” and “neck.” At the other end, toward the heel, you will find the “abdominal and pelvic region,” and on the inner rear side the “urinary bladder.”

The idea behind this is that there are reflex zones on the feet that reflect all the organs and muscle groups in our body and interact with them. Although it has not been scientifically proven, reflexology, which originates from Far Eastern tradition, is said to have all kinds of beneficial effects, particularly as a supportive measure for chronic conditions—from digestive and menstrual complaints and allergies to disorders of the skeleton or muscles. Reflexology is also said to help with sleep disorders, depression, migraines, or stress.

How does it work? First, the naturopath, physiotherapist, or massage therapist asks whether you have any complaints or pre-existing conditions. They also examine your feet for swelling or injuries. If there is nothing that would contraindicate treatment, such as diabetic foot or open wounds, the treatment can begin. The massage therapist stimulates the reflex zones with targeted massage, with the aim of transmitting the stimuli via nerve pathways to the corresponding areas of the body, increasing circulation there, and activating the body’s self-healing powers. The treatment can last between 20 and 60 minutes, so the price varies accordingly. There are primarily two types of massage: calming (sedating) or stimulating (toning).

Whether you believe in it or not is up to you. What can certainly be said, however, is that reflexology locally improves circulation and peripheral lymphatic drainage. And one thing is surely indisputable: it simply feels good!

By the way: You do not always have to visit a professional to do something good for your feet. BÄR offers various products that allow you to pamper your feet at home or on the go.
