RTL Royal Expert Michael Begasse Gives Tips for a Flawless Outfit
For more than 25 years, Michael Begasse has worked as a presenter, producer, reporter, and commentator for radio and television. He presents entertaining programs with a passion for lighthearted topics that give audiences unforgettable minutes and hours. The journalist regularly appears in various TV formats on RTL, NTV, and VOX. His appearance plays a very important role in this. In the following interview, he reveals why that is, what his personal royal highlight was, and much more:
- How did you become RTL’s royal expert?
As a young television journalist, I realized that millions of people are fascinated by the royals, but at the time we at RTL did not regularly feature them in our programming. From the very beginning, I was interested in the people beneath the crown who take on this lifelong role and put their own happiness at the service of their country. I still find that impressive today.
- What was your personal favorite royal experience?
Meghan and Harry’s wedding in Windsor in 2018. I was at the castle and truly right in the middle of it all. There was so much love in the air.
- Which of the living members of royalty would you like to meet, and why?
I have already been quite close to many royals during the long time I have been RTL’s royal expert. But the one who has always eluded me so far is Queen Silvia of Sweden. A chat with the only German queen would be very nice.
- You are known for your impeccable outfits and distinctive style. How important is appearance when reporting on royalty? And is it acceptable to dress casually in private?
From the very beginning, I have followed this outfit principle: The viewer should get the impression that I have just come from tea with the Queen, am briefly doing the interview, and will immediately return afterward! That is how I dress—with great enjoyment of fashion. You will never see me on air unshaven or without a tie. Good (clean!) sneakers can also be worn with a suit, the shirt does not always have to be white, but it must always suit me and my subject. In private, however, I dress casually and sportily.
- Which items of clothing, from head to toe, should no man be without in his wardrobe?
Every man, whether 20 or 80, needs a well-tailored dark blue suit and a bright white shirt. A tie is not essential. Shoes are important! Black or dark blue, but polished and with unworn heels. Brown or a muted green can also be suitable, depending on the styling. You can recognize a stylish man by his shoes—the kind of man who is not dressing up, but feels comfortable in his outfit. And don’t forget the matching belt!
- You have also hosted programs wearing BÄR shoes. What was your first impression?
Extremely comfortable; because of their wider and rounder shape, they may not be suitable for every suit trouser leg. The trouser leg has to be very slim, because then the BÄR shoe makes a powerful statement. Great with jeans too—which means they are also perfect for my free time.
- In your opinion, what is special about BÄR shoes?
The 100% Toe freedom! Some shoots last a very, very long time. And it is incredibly comfortable not to have to squeeze your feet into shoes that are too tight as well.
