Historical finds show that the Egyptians were already making the first sandals around 4,500 years ago. They were made from palm leaves, papyrus fibers and raw leather. The models were stretched and tied at the end of the foot. This type of sandal was ideal for hot regions and therefore spread to Asia, America and Africa as well.
The first and one of the most popular shoe styles worn by the Greeks and Romans were also sandals. Unlike those of the Egyptians, however, these were long, reached halfway up the shins and had many laces. In both countries, footwear was not divided into men’s and women’s shoes. In Greece, sandals could even be worn only by free citizens, making it easy to distinguish them from slaves. In ancient Rome, clothing and shoes were symbols of power and wealth, and they were worn according to social position and status. Here is one example: Roman soldiers wore sandals.
